Here are some tips to help you maintain your new lawn:
New Sod Care
Similar to all crops, new sod calls for extra care. It is especially important for new sod to receive proper fertilization, watering, mowing and root nourishment.
Here are some easy steps to get started with new sod care:
Watering
Water your sod immediately after installation.
Water for 45 minutes to 1 hr every day. Give extra attention to edges and areas beneath trees and shrubbery.
Continue to water at this rate for the first 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks, continue to water for 45 minutes to 1 hr, but you can change the frequency to every 2 to 3 days.
- Tip: If laying a large amount of sod, consider hiring a water truck.
Mowing
Ensure your sod has established (rooted) before the first cut. This should happen within 10 to 14 days of installation.
Keep your mower on the highest setting for the few cuts and gradually lower the mower deck down to the desired height over the next month.
- Tip: Check by gently trying to lift a corner of the sod. If it has rooted, you should not be able to lift it.
Fertilizer
Our sod will come freshly fertilized. Continue application every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Tip: Fertilizer should be watered in or applied before rain to reduce the chance of burning your lawn.
First Year Care
After the first year:
- Aerate your lawn in the spring
- Fertilize every 6 to 8 weeks
- Water your lawn regularly
